Weird Word Wednesday

Word

Definition

A sound or a combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing, that symbolizes and communicates a meaning and may consist of a single morpheme or of a combination of morphemes.

Today's weird word is:

Demophobia

Noun –

My definition:

A fear of demos conducted in supermarket aisles, where minions block your avenue of escape until you try their product.

The dictionary definition:

A fear of crowds.

I like mine better.

  1. Naturally your definition is much more better. Again. And the products that they push are almost always vile, and frequently grotesquely overpriced as well. Despite the 'introductory offer'.

    1. Yes, the "introductory offer" ruse. And they are almost always vile, EC. I suppose that's why they need demos to push it?

  2. You can combine those two in a crowded grocery store...

    1. How true, Alex! Weekends in a grocery store are scary... :)

  3. Ah yes, River. I do like your alternative. Watch out for those in the "reduced price" section at the supermarket. They finish taking all the products and then go heckle those doing demos.

    1. Heckling works for me, Gary. ;) Can we throw overripe fruit at them as well?

    2. By all means. The overripe fruit was taken from the reduced price section. It's all good in the world of heckling! :)

  4. I thought it was a fear of Demi Moore. Glad to know otherwise. But it does make sense...demographics deal with the crowd you intend to reach or do reach.

Liking your blog...when I get here!

    1. A fear of Demi Moore is perfectly understandable, Mike! As to getting to blogs - I'm just as bad. :/

    1. You have it, Chrys! That last minute decision...do I zig zag around her or do I crash my cart into her knees with a battle cry?

  6. I totally go with your definition. I hate shopping as a matter of course and those demos only make it all the more horrifying.

    1. Absolutely, Julie! They might as well go all the way and paint clown faces on themselves so we can scream in terror while running. :)

  7. LOL! I like yours better too. Whoever made up the English language totally needed to consult you before writing the dictionary. ;)

    1. I've been telling the dictionary people that for years, Crystal, but do they ever listen to me? :)

  8. Well, of course, River, if you wrote the dictionary, I'd read it from beginning to end. Your new definition of this word is so good. In the grocery store this afternoon, there she was, slathering some slop on a moldy cracker and expecting me to take it. No doubt to my grave! I like M.L. Swift's def, too.

    1. Ew...just the word "slather" brings horrifying images to mind, Ron! *chomp chomp*

And is there an epidemic of Demiphobia out there? Is it her Cougariffic attributes?

You know, my son actually read the dictionary as a child, word for word. He was on restriction a lot with nothing better to do. Has a fantabulous vocabulary now, though!

  9. Your definition...or...

The fear that grips you as you're about to demonstrate in front of an audience that's not entirely in your corner...

    Insecurities rule!

    1. In front of an audience...that is truly terrifying, Kevin! It's ok though - as long as they don't, ah, GRIP you. If you know what I mean. ;)

  10. I like your definition, too! And I don't like eating anything from those demos.

    1. The older I get, Carol, the more I think about things like all the germs collecting on that stuff as people reach onto the plate and pick their piece of the cut-up prize. *blech*
