Word
Definition
A sound or a combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing, that symbolizes and communicates a meaning and may consist of a single morpheme or of a combination of morphemes.
Today's weird word is:
Jumentous
Adj
Definition: Smelling like horse urine
I'd like to know why there is a particular word for this phenomena. Wouldn't you sidle up to the person - holding your nose, of course - and say, "Excuse me but you smell like horse piss. Just thought you'd want to know," then run like the wind?
Thoughts?

ReplyDeleteJumentous is a particularly pretentious word, and this definition was invented by grey cardigan covered pedants suffering from an excess of self-importance.
DeleteWhere the word belongs is in another verse to 'Beware the Jabberwock' Jumentous belongs with frumious, vorpal, slither and bander-snatch. And horse piss to anyone who feels differently.
Oohh...more words for me. I thank you kindly, EC. You have a scent...I mean, a sense for unusual words of pretentious, self-important origin. ;)
DeleteMakes you wonder what other urine scents have their own names...
ReplyDeleteThat was not something I wanted to wonder about, Alex... :)
DeleteJuMentos? Isn't that a Spanish breath mint? ;)
ReplyDeleteM.L. Swift, Writer
It is, Michael, and you know what it tastes like? Oh, never mind...
DeleteAha River,
ReplyDeleteI wonder if urine trouble with this one? Nah, just horsing around.
Jumentous? No, just you!
I'm going now.
Gary :)
You always crack me up, Gary. You're such a punster! :)
DeleteGrowing up on a farm where we always had at least one horse, my siblings and I used this word on a daily basis. "You're jumentous!" was considered the ultimate insult.
ReplyDeleteROFL, Ron! I probably would have gone with the more generic "You stink!" as a kid.
DeleteI guess there really is a word for everything.
ReplyDeleteThat was my reaction, Carol! Then I held my nose...
