B Is For...and the IWSG

The Insecure Writer’s Support Group

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds! Visit the main page on Alex's blog for the complete signup list!

Since I'm doing both IWSG and the A to Z, I'll stick with it being B day and talk about balance in your life. As writers, most of us have to rely on a day job, take care of the house and kids, do the cooking, spend time with the family. So where does the time for writing come in? Sometimes dead last, a few stolen moments, lost sleep.

I'd like to say I have the magic answer but I don't. I struggle with balance every day and usually lose. I need to find that sweet spot without resorting to a timer to do so. One thing I've noticed is if I refuse to turn on the computer in the morning, I do get more writing done. Facebook is such a wonderful distraction...

If you have a trick that's worked for you, leave it in the comments so we can share our experiences.

  1. Blasted balance (literal AND metaphorical) baffles (and escapes) me too.

    1. We'll bask together in bafflement, EC! Excellent use of B words. I tip my metaphorical hat to you. :)

  2. Kitty!

Sorry, love the kitty picture. So cute!

Balance is one of the things I find so difficult. As soon as I think I have it figured out, something will come up and throw me off-balance.

    1. Balance seems to be ever-changing, Cherie. And I have 26 kitty pictures for April! :)

  3. Balance is so difficult to find. I haven't found a way to do it yet. I'm hoping that will come when my kid is in kindergarten. That's still a little ways away yet.

    1. Good luck with that, Christine. My grandson is in college and balance still eludes me... ;)

I can never find any kind of balance, I'm hopeless.

  5. Clones help, but mine took one look at my Feedly reader this morning and they all quit.

    1. When you find it, Jennifer, let me know where you got it. The store shelves don't seem to carry it any longer. :)

  7. Balance is definitely something I don't do in my diet!

    1. Oh, yes, David! Diet is another huge balancing problem. :)

  8. Writing is all about keeping those balls in the air, River. Give each when its due in turn. My problem is I'd spend ALL my time writing and let everything else slide unless I put a limit on it. Okay, WIP saved. Time to those drooping plants and stacks of correspondence . . .

    1. Now you're talking willpower, Nancy...another item in short supply around here. ;) *drops another ball*

  9. Balance--something so hard to find and so easy to lose. I work on this all the time. Now, I think it's time for some punch. Got some?

    1. Have I got a delicious punch for you, Lee! Uh...break the mirrors in your house before you drink it, though...

  10. Balance, something I certainly don't have when it comes to writing. Wake up, kids, work, dinner, kids, husband, sleep. Occasionally, I get a rare moment when both kids fall asleep.

If you ever find a magical solution, I hope you share!

    1. We'll have a sharing pact, Loni, because my kids grew up and I still haven't found the answer!

  11. I try to balance all the stuff I need to do vs. like to do. Not always successful, but a little easier b/c I don't have kids.

  12. Human, River!

My human noted that you decided to use his pawfile page on Farcebook to self-pawmote! Arf! Bad human! Hi JoJo! :)

You do understand that my paws are having a tough time keeping up with all U A to Z freaks. Which is Y I arrived at B.

Oh, my human thanks you for being a part of "I Was Seeking Gary." Yes, my delusional human thanks you.

Balance is a difficult one. Heck, just trying to balance commenting and visiting and commenting and....

    1. So sorry, Penny. I was giving JoJo an aside without thinking about stealing your bone. You know how us humans swipe Gary's profile when he isn't looking. It's because he's so entertaining we like to hang out there!

There is no such thing as balance during the A to Z when dealing with comments!

    2. I bloody well would, River. My blithering rule is for me but not for thee, my honey bee. What bliss I'd miss!

    3. LMAO! What a wonderful way to put it, Ron. :D Thanks for the smile.

  14. Ahh, the ever-elusive balance. The only trick to it is to keep trying, I suppose. I haven't achieved it...ever...for more than a day at a time, which is probably why I get over-confident and crash immediately the next day. ;)

  16. Balance. Interesting concept. Like that other concept: reality.

I'm afraid I don't do either of them all that terribly well.

I, like your other readers, River, love your kitty photos.

  17. I'm still a student, but struggling to find a balance is something I face as well. Between homework and writing, and all the distractions, I know it's hard. I'm still trying to find that balance too.
